Jake Gardiner (Current 2nd Year)
Welsh Slag
This project aims to look at how stunning images can be found in the most unassuming places. Within the Pontypool constituency is the ‘Big Pit’ world heritage sight, which stands as a monument to the influences the area had during the industrial revolution. Searching for beauty in what was left behind from this golden era, the artist studied samples of slag through a microscope. The artist discovered that what may seem like waste to the naked eye – when you dig deeper – can be incredibly beautiful.

PONTYPOOL EXHIBITION

After a few months of 2nd year Photo Art students getting involved with the community, from the market stalls to the streets, we've reached the time to showcase the work in Pontypool. The private viewing for the  exhibition will take place on Thursday 14th March, 5:00pm to 8:00pm and will run until the 21st 10am-4pm daily.

The exhibitions will take place in various locations, from the Market stalls, Crane Street, Commercial Street and George Street. All of the photographers and Artists will be present to talk about their work and greet the public, as we celebrate whats been a creative and enjoyable past few months.

As well as the exhibition, there is a publication designed by Oliver Norcott which will be launched within the free press on the 13th March, copies will also be available at the exhibition.

We look forward too seeing you all there! Below is a taster of some of the work that has been going on.

Linear Substrata - James Bristow

Linear Substrata - James Bristow
Linear Substrata is an exploration of the foundations of the small Welsh town, Pontypool.
Historically layers build up over time and the once gone history becomes sealed and forgotten. In the town of Pontypool there is a distinct layer beneath the town itself, several basements, cellars and ostensibly some concealed streets lay beneath the current town. Mostly dating back to the early 1800s, these areas now lay defunct, with many of the habitants of Pontypool unaware of this concealed layer.
The aim of the project is to expose these hidden layers of the town and illustrate to the people of Pontypool the hidden layers they walk over day by day.

Welsh Slag - Jake Gardiner

Jake Gardiner has been photographing local industrial materials from the Pontypool area. Using a scientific approach he has documented Welsh slag heaps and rocks that once fuelled the factories of Pontypool to create these inciting and beautiful photographs.
